If you own pets. If you travel with pets, you should have an emergency kit prepared. Have one at home and one in your car. It’s essential to be prepared in case of disaster or an emergency when you're traveling with your pets. These kits can either be purchased or you can build your own. Building your own allows you to tailor the supplies to your pet's needs.

Accidents can happen unexpectedly, and having a first-aid kit for both you and your pet is advisable. These kits are useful to keep at home and important to bring when travelling or leaving the house with your pets. For injuries ranging from minor scratches to broken bones, it is beneficial to have the necessary supplies ready. Storing these supplies in a bag, backpack, bin, or container ensures easy transport when leaving the house.

While professional veterinary treatment should be sought for any pet injuries, a pet first-aid kit is helpful for minor injuries or situations where immediate veterinary care is not accessible. A pet first-aid kit should include medical records, supplies for cleaning and bandaging wounds, medications, and other essential items.

Always seek professional veterinary care for serious injuries. By being prepared with a firstaid kit, you can help your pet in case of an emergency.

Preparing for a disaster is an essential step to ensure both you and your pets can respond promptly. Pets, considered an integral part of our society, are most often considered household members or family members. Making sure that your pets are also prepared for a disaster is a crucial component of overall disaster preparedness. Below are steps on how to prepare your pets for the next disaster or emergency:

Make a plan:

Having a plan in place for yourself and your pets will likely reduce difficulty, stress, and worry when making decisions during an emergency. Key elements to include in your pet plan are:

  • Coordinate with neighbors, friends, or relatives to ensure someone is available to care for or evacuate your pets if you are unable to do so.

  • Designate a safe room at home for your pets that is free from hazards such as tools, debris, or toxic products.

  • Create a checklist.

Build a kit:

Similar to your family's emergency supply kit, prioritize the basics for animal survival, such as food and water. Prepare two kits: one larger kit for sheltering in place and one lightweight version for evacuation purposes. Regularly review your kits to ensure the contents, particularly foods and medicines, remain fresh.

Many other items could be included in a first-aid kit, such as magnifying glasses, muzzles, and poop bags, but the ones listed above are essential for an effective kit. Many of these items are likely already at your house, so keeping them together ensures readiness in case of an emergency. Timeliness is crucial when your pet faces an unexpected situation.
